An increasing amount of institutions and organizations are embracing principles of inclusion, equity, justice, and diversity. This week you are exploring your own cultural competency. The purpose of this is not only to be able to better support families, it is also to inspire you to create your own professional diversity statement. A diversity statement is a short personal narrative that may be required as part of a formal job application process. In some industries and professions (e.g., education, nonprofit, and government agencies, etc.), the diversity statement may be required and reviewed by the hiring manager or hiring committee. In short, the diversity statement fits into the broader application materials which include a cover letter, a resume, and any additional writing samples, lesson plans, or sample projects/proposals.
